Holy Smoke #11
Saturday March 29, 2014 marked the day for the
eleventh annual Holy Smoke Christian Grilling Competition sponsored by
Macedonia Baptist Church (Centerpoint community).
The day began with threats of thunderstorms and
100% rain predictions by the forecasters. BUT; Thank the Lord the
forecasters aren't in control of the skies. By 9:30 am the sun was
shining and it was once again a beautiful day for the competition, the
fellowship, and for the entertainment. Each of the fifteen teams that
participated began grilling their different entries around daylight and
the delicious smelling smoke filled the air throughout the day. The
singing began at 10:30 am and lasted until 5 p.m. with well known
singers from the surrounding area. Each of these individuals or groups
gave of their time to help in this mission project. They were: 1st)Dick
Gill, Ed Eschmann & Will Cobb 2nd) William Herndon & Harold
Sperling 3rd) Antioch, 4th) Mercy’s Bridge, 5th)
Dayspring Trio, 6th) Angie & Jessica Welch, 7th)
Chapter 41, and Russ Kern filled in between each set with his
harmonica.
Bar-B-Que plates were sold for the noon and evening
meal with all proceeds of the day going to the Ga. Baptist Children’s
home in Meansville Ga. and the Methodist Children’s home in Americus.
Although expenses were somewhat higher this year the
mission project surpassed last year's total by almost $500.00. There are a
couple of donations from individuals that are in the mail, but at this time
the total for this year's Holy Smoke mission project is $6,733.70
It will divided equally between the two homes.
After the evening meal the judging totals were
announced with trophies being given for the first three places in each
category and for grand champion. The results were: (SEE BELOW)
The Grand Champion of the 2014 BBQ competition
(that included all entries except cakes) was Oglethorpe Methodist Church
with runner up being Preston Baptist and second
runner up, Unadilla Baptist.
The evening ended with local auctioneer, Billy
Black, auctioning off the cake entries. This part of the event itself
raised over $2800.00 toward the total for the day.
Thank you to each of the cooking teams, singers,
workers and supporters that made this year’s Holy Smoke another huge
success.
